Storyline
Based on the infamous Smalls Island Incident of 1801 ‘The Lighthouse’ follows Thomas Howell and Thomas Griffith’s disastrous posting to Smalls Island Lighthouse to ‘keep the light’ 25 miles from land and surrounded by the deadly Irish sea. The men are stranded in a freak storm that rages for months, nothing short of an act of God. The film tells a tale of death, madness and isolation; a desolate trip into the heart of human darkness.

The lighthouse trailer 2019.
» The Light-House  » is the unofficial title of the last work written by Edgar Allan Poe. He did not live to finish it, and had barely begun it by the time of his death in 1849.
Plot summary [ edit]
The story is told as a series of diary entries, the first being New Year’s Day, 1796. The setting is an island off the coast of Norway.
On January 1, the narrator records that it is his first day in the lighthouse, and records his annoyance at the fact that he had a difficult time getting the appointment to man it, even though he is of noble birth. He records that a storm is in progress, and that the ship that brought him « had a narrow pass ». He also dwells on the concept of being alone, and how much he looks forward to spending time alone, just him and his dog Neptune, so he can write his book. He briefly comments that he hears some echo in the walls, thinking they may not be sturdy, but catches himself and claims that his worries are « all nonsense », alluding to a prophecy made by his friend DeGrat, who got him the appointment to the lighthouse.
On January 2 he describes the sea as being calm and uneventful, the wind having « lulled about day-break », and expounds on his passion for being alone.
On January 3 he describes the day as being calm and placid, and resolves to explore the lighthouse. He again begins to worry about the safety of the structure, but tries to reassure himself. The last line reads, « The basis on which the structure rests seems to me to be chalk… «
A heading for January 4 follows, but there is no text.
Composition [ edit]
Biographer Kenneth Silverman believes Poe began writing « The Light-House » between May and August 1849. [1] The work was never officially titled. [1]
It is uncertain how the story would have ended and there is some debate if « The Light-House » was intended as a short story or a novel. Silverman speculates that the work might have been complete in its two-page form and the final blank entry implied the narrator’s death. [2]
It is likely the last fiction work Poe wrote. [3]
Analysis [ edit]
Themes of foreboding, [1] isolation and paranoia are apparent in « The Light-House ».
Its style is very straightforward and plainspoken, in contrast to the more elaborate and decorated prose of Poe’s earlier stories, implying a shift in Poe’s writing style which the author did not live to realize.
Like many of Poe’s works, « The Light-House » has been studied autobiographically. The lighthouse keeper, then, stands in for Poe himself, who is expressing his own feelings of being alone and isolated and questioning if he can survive. [4]
It is very similar in theme to the later and also unfinished short story  » The Burrow  » by Franz Kafka. Both involve a reclusive narrator who obsesses over the safety of his enclosure, though Kafka’s work was much closer to completion and, consequentially, much more elaborate. Given the obscurity of Poe’s story, it is very unlikely that Kafka had read it.
Fantastic published Robert Bloch’s story based on the Poe fragment as « A New Edgar Allan Poe Masterpiece ».
Inspiration [ edit]
Author and surgeon Dr. Richard Selzer included his short story ‘Poe’s Light-house’, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe ‘s ‘The Light-House’, in ‘The Doctor Stories’, published by Picador. Joyce Carol Oates also used Poe’s « The Light-House » as an inspiration for the story ‘Poe Posthumous, or The Light-House’ in her collection Wild Nights! (2008). Leigh M. Lane’s Finding Poe (2012) speculates the role Poe’s own works, including « The Lighthouse », may have played in his mysterious death. The story also served as inspiration for Max Eggers to develop the idea of what, following his brother, Robert Eggers’ involvement, became The Lighthouse (2019).
Adaptations [ edit]
Author Robert Bloch finished Poe’s tale and published it in the February 1969 issue (#53) of Famous Monsters of Filmland as « Horror in the Lighthouse ». An earlier version appeared in the January/February 1953 Ziff-Davis publication Fantastic entitled « The Lighthouse ».
In addition to Bloch’s adaptation of « The Light-House », in the TV series The Following, fictional psychopath and serial killer Joe Carroll (played by James Purefoy) writes a novel inspired by Poe’s tale, titling it The Gothic Sea.
In 1997, Ediciones Áltera commissioned a number of Spanish and Latin American writers to complete the story, each in their own manner. They included Cristina Fernández Cubas, whose version is included in her anthology Todos los cuentos (Tusquets editores, 2008).
A 2016 film, Edgar Allan Poe‘s Lighthouse Keeper, [5] was loosely based on the story. While themes of isolation and unease in the building were preserved, the film took inspiration from Roger Corman ‘s Poe adaptations from the 1960s. [6]
According to Robert Eggers, although the final story bears little resemblance to the Poe fragment, his 2019 film The Lighthouse began as an attempt by his brother Max Eggers to do a contemporary take on the Poe story. When the project stalled, Robert offered to work with his brother and the project evolved into a period thriller with the Poe elements removed. [7]

Every fart rings out like a gunshot in The Lighthouse. Robert Eggers ’s new movie, a thriller set in the late 1800s, doesn’t aim for body horror. But it is about the horror of bodies, bodies that have been placed in forced proximity to one another for an interminable stretch of time. The sound of a casual piss reverberates through the house that the main (and only) two characters split. The contents of a chamberpot get blown back in the face of the person trying to empty it, giving him a revolting reminder that, hey, everyone poops. That same character, a young man named Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson), narrowly avoids getting hit in the face with jizz when he stumbles onto his more senior colleague in lighthouse keeping, Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe), getting a little too intimate with the lamp. Not that Winslow is in a place to judge anyone’s stroke material, no matter how odd — when he seizes a moment to himself to furtively jerk off, his masturbatory aid of choice is a crudely carved mermaid figurine.
Winslow and Wake couldn’t get away from each other if they tried. They’ve been assigned to a four-week stretch on a tiny, inhospitable island that consists of little more than the title structure, the adjoining building in which they both reside, and a signal house from which a foghorn blares. The two men, strangers who’ve only just met, share a bedroom, and in the evening they share a meal over a cramped table. Even the frame is confining; the film is shot in an aspect ratio only slightly wider than a square. The darkness at its corners feels like it’s eating away at the limited amount of space the characters have to occupy. The Lighthouse is such an effective exercise in projecting claustrophobia, in both a physical and psychological sense, that it’d be unbearable to watch if it weren’t so funny. Thankfully, it’s a scream. Pry away the historical trappings, the remote locale, the maritime-tinged language and the building hallucinations, and what you have is a story about roommates getting on each other’s nerves in grandiose fashion.
Eggers made his splashy debut in 2015 with The Witch, a genuinely unsettling horror story about a colonist family that managed the difficult trick of depicting not just Puritan life but Puritan thinking, settling itself into the mind-set of characters who didn’t just believe in the devil but believed the devil to be as imminent a threat to their precarious existence as failed crops or a bad winter. The Lighthouse is another old-timey effort, and like The Witch, it’s exacting in its period details while also feeling insistently lived in — you can sense how bad the men must smell as they pull their work clothes over the union suits they never seem to take off. To say The Lighthouse isn’t as good a film as The Witch feels both accurate and a little unfair, if only because the aims of The Lighthouse, which Eggers wrote with his brother, Max, are so much more modest and silly. It has more in common with the gleefully eccentric work of Guy Maddin than anything that sets out to scare. It’s about two men who might be harboring dark secrets that are eating them up inside but who really end up destroying each other over their inability to establish personal and professional boundaries.
At the core of the film is Pattinson’s impressively committed performance as the taciturn Winslow. As Wake, Dafoe gets to start big and just bend what he’s doing around the warps in the film’s reality. But Winslow’s is the point of view from which the film takes place, that of a greenhorn who discovers his co-worker is an irrational taskmaster by day and a garrulous alcoholic at night and equally demanding in both roles. Pattinson, whose face looks even more angular when photographed in black and white, has to navigate a slow build while scarcely talking at all. For a long stretch of the film, Winslow’s most overt displays of emotion involve not Wake but an aggressive seagull that won’t leave him alone. Dafoe may be a delight as a sea-brined gremlin with a bottomless thirst and a surprising sensitivity about his own cooking (“Yer fond of me lobster, ” he howls at one point. “Say it! ”). But it’s Pattinson, playing the straight man, who sells the slow deterioration of the pair’s mental state. Winslow vacillates between grounded moments and ones in which any sense of rationality or time passing slip away — his brooding guilt barely able to compete with his roiling irritation at having to listen to Wake tell one more rambling anecdote.
